Die Erforschung der ambivalenten Beziehung von Realität und Vorstellung, das Authentische und das Artifizielle im Verhältnis zu körperlichen und psychologischen Räumen sind Grundlagen von Ben Cottrells Arbeit. Sein Interesse besteht in der Konstruktion von Fiktion, unter Einbeziehung repräsentativer Ikonographien und Klischees, die aus bestehenden kulturellen Kontexten wie Horror, Fantasy und Landschaft abgelöst und auf Naturvorstellungen projiziert werden. Materialpräsenz und theatrale Bilderwelten werden verbunden, um eine Atmosphäre des Ungewissen zu erzeugen.
